Pre-meeting Symposium on Transplant Oncology

Transplant oncology is a new concept encompassing multiple disciplines of transplantation medicine and oncology to take hepatobiliary cancer treatment and research to the next level. As a follow-up to the Consensus Conference in February 2019, which convened international liver transplant oncology experts, this Pre-meeting Symposium explored the future perspectives of multidisciplinary management in this fast-changing field.

The symposium focussed on the 4 E’s:

  • Evolution of multidisciplinary cancer care
  • Extension of the limits of conventional surgical oncology
  • Elucidation of tumor and transplant immunology
  • Exploration of carcinogenesis through immunogenomics

Take a look at the one-pager showing the connection of the Consensus Conference to the Pre-meeting Symposium.

Organ Perfusion Workshop

The first ILTS liver perfusion workshop brought together industry and liver transplant experts for a hands-on demonstration of liver perfusion technology. Bridge to Life, OrganOx and TransMedics, all industry leaders in perfusion technology, demonstrated their machines with live porcine liver perfusion. Participants learned about perfusion techniques, assess risks and benefits, and discussed tricks and traps of perfusion technology. The participants wer able to directly compare different perfusion technologies side by side. In addition, experts in the field of liver perfusion presented the current results of warm and cold liver perfusion for the preservation, assessment, and modification of marginal grafts.

Workshop: Perioperative Echocardiography for Liver Transplantation

Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) and Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE) are useful perioperative tools for managing patients undergoing liver transplantation. Using these tools allows for rapid evaluation of volume status and cardiac function, identification of thrombotic events, and recognition of acute hemodynamic changes. Visualization of the heart helps to achieve preoperative optimization, and significantly enhances the perioperative care of these complex patients.

Participants got a hands-on introduction to using a TEE/TTE simulator and learned how to obtain the basic perioperative echocardiographic views. The focus was on 2 dimensional imaging and M-mode measurements to assess conditions commonly encountered before, during, and after liver transplantation such as hypovolemia, acute right and left heart failure, and intracardiac thrombosis.
